R-E-S-P-E-C-T, People!
A lot of various "essential" businesses have created special hours for those of us over 60. This is a good thing. Many (surely not I, at least on a good day) of us move a little slower, need a bit more time and enjoy not having to navigate our carts and fear being bumped into by those who aren't actually watching where the heck they're going! Included in that are definitely other seniors...
Our local Safeway and Fry's let it be known that they're making that time at the ungodly hour of 6-7 a.m.. We do appreciate it, greatly. Except, quite honestly, I just can't see myself or Steve getting out of bed at 5 a.m. to dress and get our limbs moving enough to drive and walk. I'm sure others aren't having a problem with that at all. I'm also sure a LOT of us feel the same and Steve and I.
Then we decided to go to Costco during the senior hour there. It's from 8-9. We arrived and parked at 7:45. We hobbled up to the beginning of the entry maze. Whoa! We were already in the 3rd row to wait to get into the place! There were two signs attached to either of the posts telling everyone that they were opening up at 8 strictly for people over 60. Plus, a nice woman in a mask and gloves stood there pointed out the signs.
Some people were going the entry-they were "cutting" the line! They also clearly weren't over 60! Truth be told I somehow doubted they were millennials. Did they think the mask made them look older? It definitely did not.
If they looked around them, it would have been a giant clue. And, if the amount of gray hair didn't awaken their small powers of observation-then the fact that a LOT of the people in line said several times, quite loudly, "This line is for people over 60!"
Evidently they are also profoundly unable to hear as well.
Several couples did this! When they arrived at the top of row 2, the woman in the Costco vest tapped them on the shoulder and said they had to wait until 9, this was seniors only. They looked at her and turned around! At least 2 of the set of disrespectful shoppers did similar behaviors. One set rolled their eyes, said something nasty and stomped out of line. Another got verbally abusive and stood there glaring. The rest looked rather sheepish and left the crowd.
This clearly wasn't a COSTCO problem! This was a YOU, the ones who didn't read, didn't listen problem! Their behavior is an unfortunate glowing example of what is starting to happen to the close and helpful feelings about getting through this recent muck.
I beg of you all, please continue to get through this together with respect, kindness and a good attitude.
It will help if you just listen and observe the basics as well.
