Busy Work

BUSY WORK

I enjoy having something useful to do when I’m at the day job. Especially on days where the owner chooses to visit with us.

There is probably nothing as tiring as trying to look efficient and busy as when there is absolutely nothing to do.

Now if the owner isn’t “in the building” I’m able to check my personal e-mails by remote, go to MSN and see what has been happening in the outside world, write rough drafts on articles (or as I’m doing now, this week’s blog) or Google some needed information for those said articles. There’s also reading books in need of reviewing and (one of my favorites on a nice day) getting out for a 20-30 minute trash,, mail and phone call walk.

Yes, when not solving the plumbing problems of the OC’s elite-I do try to make the most use of my time.

However, when the boss is “in the house”, I need to be busy with more than answering phones, creating client spec books, forming RGA packets (return goods authorizations for defective and/or people who change their minds and make returns), entering product codes, writing purchase orders and a very grand host of other jobs. Some of which include charging large amounts of money to credit cards and posting it on the bills of sale.

Oh yes, the glamour at the day job just NEVER ends-EXCEPT when the boss is there. Somehow whenever he arrives, my full plate always seems to have just been scraped clean and sterilized.

Then I have to work hard to find things to do.

It’s horrible. It must be karma. I may not have the time to go to the bathroom for over 4 hours, have the phone pressed to my ear and I’m on the computer and the fax machine all at the same time UNTIL that man walks in the door!

Then suddenly-NOTHING!

I hate it. I’ve even tried keeping something “on the side” for just these occasions.

But I hate piles of undone work (even busy work), so I pretend a lot. I go over purchase order’s I’ve checked at least 4 or 5 times. Read my sent and deleted e-mails (the work ones of course), stare at my blotter-acting as if I’m looking intently for something in particular.

Funny thing-as soon as he bids his farewell and leaves, the whole darn problem seems to disappear! The phones begin to come off the hook, customers are telling me all about their latest problem with something they’ve purchased. I have problems galore to solve again.

Where were these people while I was dying to have something to do to keep me busy?

Either way, thank goodness when my plate is full once again. I really do enjoy having something useful to do at the day job.

Comments:
Uhhhh, aren't you kinda worried he might see this blog? I mean, you use your real name here and all. Which is one reason why you'll never find my full name on my blog. Plausible deniability in case someone stumbles onto my blog, e.g. "It must be another Big Dave." I rarely write about work anyway, for the same paranoia.

Sometimes I wonder however whether I'm too 'distracted' at work by the e-mail, internet, etc. My colleague here who shares the same work responsibilities I do manages to get his work done a lot more quickly than I. I attribute it to my being older.

Dave,
Never. I've made no bones about my "outside" life, and my articles from the newspaper are in the break room at the main store everyday-they've never seen it. It's never even occured to them I have a life outside of this store-except for the time they asked me to re-write the new website-FOR FREE.
and their a/c person is always sending out company wide funny videos and such and she's right there in front of them.

That's murphy's law for you, Carine !

Can we rescehdule Tuesday ??? I am really sorry, but I look like I kissed asphalt and the doctor said that I need to stay indoors for a week because my face is so raw from the active fx fractional ultrapulse CO2 peel !!!
If we could do it the follwing Tuesday ? Or maybe do you want to come here, since I am stuck indorrs ? Let me know, okay ?
and again, I apologize - I didn't know it would be this drastic. They never tell you until AFTERWARDS how bad things are going to be....

auggggh, typos. I need to type slower and look before I push publish. sigh.

no worries Annie, just take care of yourself. I understand completely. I somehow lost your e-mail and phone #! I'll look it up on Monday. The following Tuesday is fine.
I feel for you-although if the procedure would even out my skin tones-I'd give it a try!

Thanks for stopping by my place. Like it said....I've been running around with my Lesley, but we have also been remodeling our guest bath. Had to tear the wallpaper off (10 hours), hire a plasterer, have a new floor laid and make lots of visits to Bed, Bath and Beyone and Home Depot. We may be old, but we are doing the new young thing....D&D....Dinner and Depot on Friday night. Boy, are we with it! Well, I drifted off the subject a bit....you can keep doing private work on your computer as long as you stay away from porn sites! lol

kacey,
thanks for popping in-oh the bath remodel. You know, everyone assumes I must have the "best" bathroom ever-taint true. I don't get paid enough to buy the product, even at my discount and I really don't have the money for the labor! Enjoy the bathroom when it's done, I know you'll love it!

LOL Carine!

Cole

Hi Cole,
I live w/ the idea that you must look at the funny side of things.

Carine - next time give us a heads-up and we can email you and call you asking about assorted plumbing fixtures. LOL - this sounds like a sit-com.

Kathy, my pleasure! We have supplied several hotels and restaurants in Vegas w/ fixtures. In fact, I just talked to one of the new investors who bought the Sahara-she had me send her some brochures about Sonoma Cast stone and Forge products.
anytime!
