Sometimes Life Isn't Listening
Last week sonny boy, younger grands and I went to Orange County to visit both my sister/family and my dad. The trip was not as stressful as we had anticipated. Thank goodness.
You can never tell what's going to happen on a road trip when you have small fry along! I have to say-the kids were literally and figuratively little angels. We didn't have a single melt down or whining session from either one. That's saying a lot since we were in the car for 7 hours going and coming back and other than the swimming pool and movies there wasn't a whole lot for them to do.
And I'm bragging here, but Adam's one really great dad!
Once at my sister's, I did what I could to help her prep for her annual July 4th party. It was a rather hard day for everyone since my mom would've been 88 on the fifth. We broke my dad out of his memory care unit after he had lunch so he could be with us.
For those of you who are fortunate not to have a family member with Alzheimer's disease, let me explain that the afternoon ranged from his not even knowing what was going on, to telling strangers that this was the only time he saw anyone (I did call him on that-since he literally has the most visitors of all the residents there!) and then crying because my mom wasn't there.
He started to get very weepy as it got dark so Adam and my brother-in-law took him back home.
The next day Adam, the kids and I went to visit him there. We stayed about 2 hours. Most of it on the patio in the courtyard so the kids could runaround and not watch the other people in the unit.
Then even though my brother-in-law had fixed his TV and phone the night before, my dad had again unplugged everything in the room. Adam spent 30 minutes on the project. We ended up taking the phone since we didn't know what he had done to that poor item.
It seems my dad's latest obsession is to take things apart. Of course he can't put them back together! Hence, my sister having to get him a new razor and several other things in the past few weeks.
Friday had us taking him out to lunch. He was even smiling at the little ones and ate everything on his plate. Then he realized as we got to the corner of his living center where he was and the crying began.
Next morning it was breakfast with Sam's side of the family and back in the car for 7 hours.
My sister and I went through a lot of boxes, got a lot of minor decisions made and then we just said, ENOUGH! Sarah has planned a girls weekend for all of us close to our birthdays, so she'll bring out the rest then and we'll have a "good" time going through whatever else is there.
This week, Adam and Sam are off on their first vacation since their honeymoon!
To finish my week-I was in my swimsuit, bag in hand, hat on my head when my car decided to point out that instead of having fun in the pool my destination was down the street at Discount Tires to fix a flat.
Bummer.
