Old Joke With a New Twist
Did you hear the old joke about how many people does it take to change a light bulb?
That's how this week has been for me, but obviously with a twist.
Last week I received a note for jury duty. Last time my pain management doctor wrote a note and sent it over and within two days I received word that I had been excused.
This time things didn't go near as easy.
Honestly, if I were physically capable of sitting in hard furniture for hours at a time and my knees wouldn't feel as if I had knives stabbing them within 15 minutes of getting behind the wheel of my car, I'd actually enjoy doing jury duty. In fact, when I was younger I was wondering why I never got summoned! But that was then and this is now.
The summons told me to go on-line and fill out a whole questionnaire and then what I had to have my doctor do to please the court. I went to my primary care who laughed and said, "You're on permanent disability and the last doctor wrote that you would probably never be able to drive that far on your own and sit for that many hours!" Then she took my information and sent off a similar diagnosis to the appropriate fax number.
I was denied!
Called the doctor. She was flabbergasted. So was I. Plus, I was wondering how would I get my knees to drive the 45 miles downtown, sit in those hard seats for possibly an entire day and then drive myself home? Steve has to drive me to pain management-I'm uncomfortable and trying to find a way to make it the 35 miles as a passenger!
Primary doctor said to get my specialists to also send notes. So the rheumatologist, the pulmonologist and the pain management doctors sent over notes.
Guess what? That afternoon, my denial was turned into "You are excused from jury duty".
So, if you're wondering, "How many medical professionals does it take to get a superior court to excuse a patient from jury duty?" The number is 4.
