The Winter of My Discontent
I have never made any "bones" about hating the cold. I would much rather deal with the six months of 115 degree days that make me get up at 5 a.m. to walk the dogs than deal with the last 2 weeks of 30 degree mornings.
It's a brand new year, so I'm pushing for (in sort of this order): Boredom, good health, re-starting of water aerobics, finding a solution (or 2,3,4, etc) for any number of pesky and chronic issues that have been making me a very cranky older woman.
We celebrated Steve's 62nd birthday the other night. Ten of us all gathered around the table. All the various dishes came out quite tasty. Since we had to make a Costco run after breakfast, I decided that since our younger grands weren't exactly in love with the idea of eating a prime rib roast, I'd buy a rotisserie chicken to add to the mix. Steve really wanted his Marie Callendar's French apple pie for dessert.
I have a little confession to make: I HAVE NEVER MADE A FROZEN PIE IN MY LIFE.
But it came out okay. Plus, Sarah made some paleo chocolate cupcakes for anyone who didn't want the pie. My Yorkshire puddings came out of the oven looking gorgeous, if I do say so myself. I also tried an espresso rub on the roast-quite tasty. I put it on Monday afternoon which really helped get the flavors into the meat.
I have to say, even though I did my best to make it as easy as possible-I was totally wiped by the time everyone left at 8:30. I had to put up two loads of dishes and scrub 3 sinkfuls of pots, pans and other items that couldn't go into the dishwasher but that's just all part of a family dinner.
Next day, Steve and I used his breakfast freebie at First watch. Love that place! Then we went to see "Welcome to Marwen". I know some of the reviews weren't great-but honestly, it was a very good movie. That makes 4 movies in the last 6 weeks for me and they were all worth the pain of walking up and down those stupid stairs and sitting in the "comfortable" back torturing chairs for-which is saying a lot!
I don't know about your NYE, but we literally spent ours in our PJs. I also had the girls on my lap and Pepper hanging out on the top of my recliner with his head on my head. Guess I make a good pillow.
We watched not the usual NYE programming, but we found that TCM was showing "That's Entertainment, Part 2" and watched it. Amazing-a 42 year old film provided more entertainment and joy than any of the other stations.
Happy 2019!
